Do You Need More Vitamin D? Power Juicer’s Secret Ingredient

September 10, 2010 in Health Information, Juicing Tips

Cooler weather and the Fall season brings less sunlight and no more sun-filled days at the beach. For most, this means their glowing tans disappear and additional layers of clothes are added. For many, it also means you’re bodies are not soaking up as much vitamin D as it does in the summer time. Vitamin D is important for many different health reasons. With help from the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer and one important vegetable, you can make sure you are getting more vitamin D in your diet.

In that past decade, research has been emerging that just one 3-oz. serving of mushrooms can give you 100% of the recommended intake of vitamin D. Just give them a blast of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) light. UV-B light is the same there is in sunlight. Growing or recently picked mushrooms are exposed briefly to UV-B light and studies have found this gives them a boost of vitamin D. Mushrooms are the one thing we encourage to tan. The Sun Bella line of mushrooms is one brand that has been exposed to UV-B light.

But why is vitamin D so important anyway? The National Institute of Health (NIH) defines vitamin D as being important for strong bone growth and remodeling. Bones may become brittle or thin if you have vitamin D deficiency. It can also help prevent osteoporosis in adults and rickets in children. Vitamin D can help reduce inflammation as well.

To ensure you are getting the right amount of vitamin D in your diet, use mushrooms when using your Power Juicer. Mushrooms are one of the few natural food sources of vitamin D. Even without the UV-B blast of light, mushrooms do still provide some vitamin D to your body.

Mushrooms are one of the vegetables that are a little more difficult to juice. We recommend juicing mushrooms first and then adding a fruit or vegetable that is easier to juicer. One great combination would be a mushroom followed by an orange to get both vitamin D and C in your diet.

Make sure you speak with your doctor if you think you aren’t getting enough vitamin D. There are many ways to get vitamin D in your body. Juicing mushroom with your Power Juicer is definitely one of them.
