New Report Indicates Packaged “Health” Drinks Are Full of Sugar

The so-called health drinks you shell out big bucks for may not be as good for you as you think, according to a new report from nutritionist Molly Kimball, RD. In an article published this month in the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper, the nutritionist cautions against the hidden dangers of pre-packaged health drinks. She urges health-conscious individuals to juice their own fruit and vegetables for maximum health benefits.

As more health-conscious consumers choose eco-friendly living, businesses see the economic incentive of aligning their products with consumers’ values. Marketers slap labels like “natural” and “organic” to push products. While vitamin drinks and energy drinks may in fact be made with natural, organic ingredients, and may even have vitamins and nutrients in them, their labels may be misleading.

Oftentimes there are also preservatives and additives in pre-packaged juices. Even such juices as V8 V-Fusion, Green Goddess, and Naked Juice’s Green Machine Superfood add “loads of natural sugars to the drinks,” according to Kimball. In fact, she says there’s “more than you would get in a 16-once soft drink.” Just because the sugar is natural doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

“Juice the veggies yourself so that you get to decide exactly what goes into — and what stays out of — your own green drink,” advises the nutrition expert. Juicing your own organic fruits and vegetables with such tools as the Power Juicer puts the power back in your hands. You’ll have peace of mind when you control what’s going into your health drinks.
