Jack LaLanne's tips for physical perfection and longevity
October, 2004 — The neck is one of the most neglected body parts but one that's essential for you to build and stretch. If you work all four sides of your neck, you can minimize mechanical problems. Getting blood to your neck is the key. Circulation does the building and the tearing down.
One of the easiest times to focus on your neck is right after awakening, while you're still in bed. Begin your day with isotonic training - that's where you make a muscle contract under relativity constant tension while its length changes.
First put both hands behind your head. Now tilt your head back, but consciously resist the force with your hands. Then place your hands on your forehead and tilt your head forward, resisting the force with your hands. Do each movement 10 times.
Then place your right hand on the right side of your head and your left hand on the left side of your neck. Pull your chin toward the right side of your chest, and then push back to an upright position, resisting the movement both ways. Do that 10 times. Reverse the hand positioning and do the same isotonic movements the opposite way, again 10 times each.
Those 40 movements are a simple but effective way to start your rigorous morning workout.
