Keeping Thanksgiving healthy this year

November 14, 2012 in Health Information, Holiday Ideas

With the holidays sneaking up on us fast, it’s time to start getting ready for family, festivities, fun and, well, food.

Here are three ways to keep your calories and health in check:

1. Eat. Do not wake up Thanksgiving morning and even think about skipping breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast (or having your healthy juice - or both!) is a great way to ensure that you don’t over-do the more indulgent foods you might have later on that day.

2. Move. Before heading out for the festivities, take a Zumba class, participate in a Turkey-trot 5K, ride a bike, do some jumping jacks in the living room, pop in an exercise DVD — whatever it is, burn a few calories so those calories don’t burn you!

3. Contribute. If you’re in control of the meal then it’s time for you to start experimenting with healthier recipes for some of your favorite traditional recipes. If you’re visiting someone, then contribute to the meal by bringing a lightened-up side dish, fresh fruit or other healthier option.

Power Juicer review from All About Juicing

November 4, 2012 in Power Juicer Reviews

Obviously, we love the Jack LaLanne Juicer but we love when we stumble others who love it too!

Thank you All About Juicing for this great review!

Their review says:

What’s great about this juicer?

  • Will last you a while: This juicer is a sturdy!
  • You won’t be confused by the assembly: The parts are fairly simple and the assembly is easy.
  • No disturbing the household with loud noises: It is a quiet juicer. It emits a low hum and vibration.
  • Cleanup is no problem…. Most parts are dishwasher safe. (Who doesn’t love that?)
  • You can juice greens and grasses if you want to. Grasses (and other produce with low water content) can be juiced with ease. While most centrifugal models can’t juice greens, this one does.
  • Easy storage: It will easily fit in your cabinets and can be brought out for a quick juice any time during the day!
  • Attractive design for your countertop: It also is a modern, petite design, able to fit on most countertops comfortably, without being an eye sore.”

Cheers!

Happy and healthy Halloween treats

October 15, 2012 in Holiday Ideas, Power Juicer Kids

I am striving to provide a healthy lifestyle for myself and family. As such, I really am looking for ideas to move away from bringing excess candy into my home. Don’t get me wrong, an occasional treat is one thing but the last thing I need is bags and bags of candy in my home.

I loved the suggestions I found in this blog post from 100 Days of Real Food. The post is titled “20 Ways to do Halloween without candy!” It had some really great ideas in it.

For example you might give out:

  • Temporary tattoos or stickers
  • Toothbrushes
  • Fun little toy trinkets from a dollar store
  • Halloween-themed pencils
  • light-up glow sticks
  • mini-bottles of water decorated with orange and black ribbon

By the way, I love the tangerine idea in the picture above (Source). Decorating them as little pumpkins is adorable and you can juice the leftovers!!

And what about all that candy that comes back to your house with your kids? We have our son pick out seven pieces of candy to keep (one piece per day for one week) and then my husband takes the rest to work and puts it in the break-room for everyone at his office to share.

Do you plan on doing something different for Halloween this year?

Do you do anything creative (besides eat it!) with your left-over candy?

Where’s the Beef? Going Vegetarian

September 26, 2012 in Edible Garden

I’ve personally been making a move towards eating a more plant based diet for a few years now. I am not completely vegetarian but that might be just a matter of time. We’ll see.

If you’ve considered going vegetarian for health or social reasons then you probably have some questions.

When making such a lifestyle decision you should consider the following:

  • Food. This might seem obvious but you truly have to have a plan especially if you’re leaning towards cutting out all things animal based like milk, cheese, fish and eggs. The fruits and vegetables are the easy part but what are you going to do to ensure a fully balanced diet? It’s important to make sure that you’ll be incorporating into your meals good sources of protein regularly. This could include grains like quinoa, beans, nuts and soy. You might want to get some ideas by perusing vegetarian cookbooks and juicing recipes found here.
  • Your family. If you are single or live on your own your decision won’t impact others as much, however, if you have a spouse and family, you’ll need to take them into consideration. When I began living a healthier lifestyle it impacted the whole family. As a marathoner logging the miles I need means I am away from home for hours on long run days. When it comes to food, its the same thing. It’s not impossible to be a vegetarian when you’re married to a carnivore but you should definitely have frank and open discussions before tossing all the meat out of the fridge.
  • Healthy? Plenty of people make the move and become the healthiest they’ve ever been. They thrive in fact. However, I know a few people who did not thrive. I have one friend who found herself getting sick more often and another who began to lose her hair. I would take an educated guess and say it was because they weren’t as careful as they should’ve been to ensure they were getting in all the nutrients and protein that they needed. I would recommend you speak to your physician about your plans and then consult a nutritionist with an expertise in vegetarianism to ensure that you are doing what is best for you.

By the way, you don’t have to go 100% vegetarian all at once. Many people ease into it by doing a few meatless days a week.

Are you a vegetarian?

What advice would you give others interested in the vegetarian lifestyle?
