As Bears fans and media continue to dissect the personality of Jay Cutler, second-year wide receiver Earl Bennett provides some insight into what makes the Pro Bowl quarterback tick.

"Our relationship goes past the field," Bennett told a Bears Press Pass event audience in Soldier Field's United Club on Tuesday night. "Jay and I met my freshman year in college (at Vanderbilt), and he kind of took me under his wing. He was pretty much a big brother to me. ... He ended up coming back and throwing to me for my Pro Day (workout). We have the same agent, Bus Cook. And when Jay got traded here, we were both excited."

With regard to Cutler's personality, Bennett said:

"He's a great guy. He's one of those guys who likes to joke around, but he is also a very serious person when he is on the field. It's kind of hard to differentiate when he's joking and when he's serious in the huddle."

Bennett left Vanderbilt after three seasons as the all-time leading receiver in the SEC before becoming a third-round pick of the Bears in 2008. After not catching a pass as a rookie, Bennett has become one of Cutler's favorite targets this season, catching a team-high 15 passes for 200 yards. He knows Cutler demands perfection from himself and from his teammates.

"He sort of has the demeanor that he will look at you and say: 'For real, you let that pass drop?' or 'Come on, you can do better,' " Bennett said. "He will come talk to you if you messed up on your adjustment and he will make some minor tweaks and adjustments in your route. ... He is just trying to make you better."

Overheard: Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, out for the season with a wrist injury, took time this summer to discuss his controversial personal life with Fox Sports Net reporter Laura Okmin for an episode of a new show called "Vizio Pro Football Sports Pro-files." Okmin went fishing with Urlacher off Marco Island, Fla., for part of the interview that aired across all Fox Sports Net regional networks.
